About

Community Work

From a young age, Vernon has been actively involved in the community. He first started as a camp counselor at a local church at the age of 13 and immediately realized he was able to connect with his peers and the youth. Vernon would go on to mentor undergraduates in college and worked with youth in the university town through Big Brother, Big Sister. During college breaks, Vernon volunteered as a librarian at his hometown's public library so that community members could check out books and use the computers for educational, professional, and leisure purposes.

Even though he struggled to make ends meet once he moved to Washington, DC in 2009, Vernon still made it a priority to be active in the community. He served as a mentor at local high schools and was a mentor with Higher Achievement's Afterschool Academy. In addition, Vernon led several scouting programs for the National Capital Area Council's Boy Scouts program.

In 2013, Vernon founded investED Enrichment Services, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the Washington, DC metropolitan region, providing assistance to at-risk youth and persons living in low income communities, in the form of tutoring, mentoring and community service activities. The organization currently conducts a mentoring program serving youth in Southeast Washington, DC with tutoring sessions for those struggling in particular school subjects as well as seminars based on specific topics including, but not limited to: health and wellness, goal setting, financial literacy, life after high school, dining etiquette, self-esteem building, public speaking, proper hygienic practices, and dressing for success.
